How to Remove Old Leaf Guards for Gutters
Leaf guards help prevent leaves, sticks and debris from entering the gutters and causing blocks and leaks. Even though leaf guards block most of the large objects from entering the gutters, small debris can still find a way in. To clean your gutters and remove any blockage or debris you must first remove the leaf guards from the gutters.
Items needed:
- Ladder
- Screwdriver or drill (if needed)
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Lean a ladder against the house near the area of the leaf guard that needs to be removed. Make sure the ladder is standing on flat ground and touches the house. If the ladder is wobbly you could risk falling off.
Step 2: Put on your safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself during the removal process. Take your screwdriver or drill and climb up the ladder to the part of the leaf guard you plan to take off.
Step 3: Look on the front edge of the gutter for screws or clips that hold the leaf guard in place. Use a screwdriver or drill to remove any screws or use your hands to pry off any clips.
Step 4: Slowly pull the leaf guard away from the gutter. The leaf guard will snap away from the gutter one piece at a time. Be careful you don't lose your footing on the ladder as you pull the leaf guard from the gutter.
Step 5: Step down from the ladder and move the ladder along the roof to remove each piece of leaf guard from the gutters. Repeat the process.
