How to Remove Old Wall Paint

Painting your walls is usually a relatively simple task, but there are some things you need to do before applying your new paint. It is always best to remove old paint before applying a new coat. There is really no easy way to remove old paint. The method can be time consuming but necessary to make your new paint job look good.

Items needed:

  • Gloves

  • Goggles

  • Face mask

  • Plastic floor covering

  • Paint scraper

  • Paint remover

  • Rough grade sandpaper

  • Paint

Instructions:

  1. Put on gloves and old clothing to protect your skin from harsh chemicals. Many chemicals that are used to remove paint contain ingredients that may be harmful to the skin. Many chemicals cause burns to your skin if exposed. You may also choose to invest in a face mask.

  2. Cover your floor with a protective covering to avoid spills. A lot of these chemicals used to remove paint can damage carpet and other floor-type materials.

  3. Apply methylene chloride paint remover to the area with the old paint. Try to spread as much of it around on the wall using your brush. Be careful to avoid spills.

  4. Allow the paint remover 30 minutes to sit on the wall and absorb into the paint. This gives the remover time to absorb into the paint.

  5. Test the paint with a paint scraper to see if it comes off easy. Scrape the paint downward on the floor. Make sure you leave no paint behind. Be careful not to splash the solution around to other areas. Use steel wool to scrape away any difficult spots.

  6. Take a rough grade of sandpaper and scrub over the area to clear out the last of the paint.

  7. Allow the wall to dry completely before applying your new paint. Make sure you dispose of old paint properly.
