How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Fabric

Few stains inspire more dread than the spilling of red wine on your clothes. This does not mean that your outfit is ruined however, provided that the stain is not allowed to set. It is possible to remove red wine stains from just about any kind of fabric, often by using some simple home-made methods.

  1. If the fabric is a garment that must be dry cleaned, get it to a dry cleaner right away. Do not attempt to pre-treat the stain or it could become impossible to remove.

  2. Use clean white paper towels to dry blot the stain immediately. Never rub it, as this might ingrain it into the fabric or cause it to spread.

  3. Pour white wine over the stain if there is any available. White wine neutralizes red wine.

  4. Pour vinegar onto the stain. The smell will go away after machine washing. Alternately, mix 1 part dishwashing soap (make sure it doesn't have any bleach) and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and spray the stain.

  5. Never iron clothes or put it into the dryer if the stain has not been removed. This will cause the stain to become permanent.
