How to Remove Roof Insulation

Energy efficiency has become a hot topic in recent years. Increased heating costs and a struggling economy are part of the reason. A concern for the strain on our Earth is another. Proper insulation is a great step toward an energy-efficient home, and removal of old insulation can easily be a do-it-yourself project.

Materials Needed

  • gloves

  • mask

  • overalls or coveralls

  • ladder

  • shovel

  • heavy duty trash bags (recyclable if possible)

  • Shop-Vac

  1. Look for a recycling center. Many will accept used insulation. Be sure to ask if special bags are required.

  2. Choose the right day for the job. Lofts and attics tend to trap heat in the summer and lock in cold air in winter months. The job is going to be uncomfortable regardless of the season; however, moderate air temperature is ideal.

  3. Protect yourself. Many types of rolled insulation can cut or irritate exposed skin. Wear gloves to protect your hands, as well as a mask to avoid inhaling harmful particles. Coveralls or overalls may also be desired. Attempt renovations when the space is unoccupied to limit the number of people exposed to insulation particles in the air.

  4. Begin pulling out the old insulation. Roll the insulation back up as you move along and place in trash bags.

  5. Shovel out all loose pieces as well as those that are difficult to remove.

  6. Vacuum out the entire space. It should be free from insulation pieces and all other debris prior to new insulation being installed.

  7. Recycle the bags of old insulation if possible or dispose of properly.

  8. Prepare to begin installation of new insulation.
