How to Remove Rust From Metal Wall Art

Metal wall art can become rusty when oxygen mixes with the metal. This can leave your artwork looking less than appealing. If the rust is not treated it will continue to cover more of the wall art. Removing rust from your metal artwork can be done by following a few simple steps.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wire brush

  • Paper face mask

  • White vinegar

  • Cloth rag

  • Plastic bucket

  • Spray bottle

  1. Put on your face mask before beginning the project. Rust can be very dangerous if you get it in your mouth, nose or eyes.

  2. Use a wire brush to scrub the areas of the metal wall art that are rusted. The wire brush will remove the loose metal pieces from the area.

  3. Fill your plastic bucket with an entire bucket of white vinegar. When removing rust you do not want to dilute the vinegar in any way.

  4. Soak your rag in the vinegar and ring it out. You want the cloth to be damp with vinegar, but not saturated.

  5. Scrub the rusted area with the vinegar. You may want to add some baking soda to the cloth to create a stronger solution and a fine grain for scrubbing.

  6. Let the area soak for a few hours while covered in the vinegar solution. The vinegar takes time to completely remove the rust from the area, so the longer you wait the more successful your cleaning will be.

  7. Fill your spray bottle with warm water and lightly mist the area. You want to use as little water as possible to remove the remaining rust and vinegar.
