How to Remove Steel Fence Posts From Concrete
Installing fence posts in concrete is a great way to keep them from moving or falling over during bad weather. The problem is when you decide you want to remove them. This project will be challenging but possible if you have the right equipment.
Things You'll Need:
- Tow Strap
- Farm Jack
- Goggles
- Gloves
- Hammer
- Pick
- Attach a tow strap around the steel post a few times. These straps should be easily found in a home improvement store or farm supply store.
- Attach the other end of the tow straps to a farm jack. These jacks probably can be rented at a farm supply store or you might be able to rent one from a friend. Make sure the tongue of the jack is facing the post. Also try to place the jack on level ground; obviously this isn't always possible however.
- Start cranking the jack to build up tension on the straps. Make sure you're wearing gloves and goggles to protect your eyes and hands.
- Crank the jack hard to try and break the post loose from the concrete. You might have to try several times before it starts to move a little. If you notice the concrete starting to crack, you might be able to take a hammer and pick to loosen it even more. Consider having someone help you crank the jack for extra force. Be careful when you notice the post moving farther out because it could pop out really fast at the end and cause you to fall over.
