How to Remove Truck Wheels
Removing truck wheels is somewhat different from removing car wheels. This is mainly because truck wheels are heavier and are often connected to other mechanisms, like bolts and four-wheel drive components. Removing the wheels can be especially difficult if the mechanism is rusty.
Items Needed:
- Vehicle jack
- WD40 / grease spray
- Large stone or wooden block
- Tool kit with spanner and screwdrivers
- Road reflector and flash light
- Spray WD40 or grease to loosen the nuts on the wheels. This is especially important if the bolts and chains have rusted and are stuck to the steel or aluminum rims.
- Loosen the bolts but do not remove the parts yet, wait until the truck is raised.
- Position the jack under the truck next to the wheel you are removing. The jack should be placed where it will be able to support the trucks metal frame. Be sure the jack is on a level hard surface so that it will not fall or sink into the ground.
- Place a rock or block of wood behind another tire as a precaution. This will prevent the truck from rolling backwards as you remove the wheel. Always use a reflector if you are changing the wheel on a roadside.
- Pump the jack to lift the truck until the wheel lifts far enough off the ground for removal. Remove the bolts.
- Replace the wheel with the spare and replace all the bolts. Do not completely tighten the nuts until the vehicle is jacked back to the ground.
