How to Remove a Brake Master Cylinder
Learning to remove a brake master cylinder yourself is a way to save you money and time. The brake master cylinder controls the car’s braking system, and at times needs to be removed from the car to be replaced with a new cylinder.
Items Needed:
- Wrench
- Socket wrench
- Drip Pan
- Park the car on a level surface and put it into park. Apply the parking brakes.
- Pop open the hood of the car and find the brake master cylinder, which is usually on the driver’s side of the car near the brake fluid lines.
- Put the drip pan underneath the brake master cylinder to catch any brake fluids.
- Use a wrench to remove the nuts from the brake lines that are connected to the brake master cylinder. The excess fluids should drip into the pan below. Keep the brake fluid from getting on a painted surface because brake fluid is corrosive.
- Use a socket wrench to rotate the bolts holding the brake master cylinder in place in a counter clockwise rotation.
- Remove the cylinder out of the brake booster and the car once the bolts are disconnected.
Tips:
- You want to park the car on a level surface to ensure it does not move while you are working on it. Parking on a hill or graded area could cause injury to you or someone else if your car moves.
- If by chance you spill the brake fluid, use clean kitty litter to soak up the spill.
