How to Repair Tires and Wheels

How to Remove and Install Wheels & Tires

You can save money by taking off the rims and tires on your car and replacing them yourself instead of going to an automobile repair shop. All that it will take to remove the rims and tires on your car are a few tools and a little bit of strength.

Materials needed:

  • Jack

  • Jack stands

  • Lug wrench

  • Blocks

  • Bowl

  1. Put cement blocks on both sides of the car's back tires. These blocks will keep your car from rolling while it is jacked up. Check to make sure that your car's transmission is in park.

  2. Put the jack under the end of the car that is up front. Lift the car a few inches in the air. There should be several inches of air that is between where you will be working and the tire. Put jack stands under the front axle.

  3. Remove the lug nuts from the front tires using a lug wrench. To avoid misplacing these lug nuts, place them in a bowl or somewhere safe where you will remember where you put them.

  4. Take the old wheel and tire off of the wheel assembly. Put the new wheel and tire on the wheel assembly. Tighten and replace the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Make sure that you tighten the lug nuts. If you do not tighten them enough, the wheel can fall off.

  5. Bring the car down.

  6. Repeat this process on the tires in the rear. Remember to place cement blocks in front of the tire and behind the tire before jacking the car's rear end up.
