How to Rent Subsidized Government Housing

Subsidized government housing is designed for those that cannot afford to live in decent areas. The division that handles the subsidized government housing is called HUD. There is a HUD location in every county; each location operates several types of housing for qualifying people. Renting subsidizing government housing can be moderately challenging.

  • Visit your local HUD office and fill out an application. There are several qualifications that must be met to qualify for subsidized government housing; all of these requirements must be met to be approved. Be sure that you provide all required documents and proof that you meet the eligibility requirements to qualify to rent HUD homes and apartments.

  • Get on the waiting list. Because there are so many impoverished and disabled people that are applying for HUD housing and there are so few places available, the waiting list to get a house or apartment to rent can be up to ten years long. Make sure that you get on the waiting list and fill out any required paperwork as it comes to you to stay on the list. Any sort of discrepancy or late paperwork can put you at the end of the list.

  • Once you are approved and your time has come to be able to rent subsidized housing, start looking for apartments and homes. These could be few and far between, so as long as it meets the basic necessity requirements, it is advised that you take the place before it is gone. Apply for the apartment or home. Make sure that you include in your application that you are applying for HUD housing as this often gives you a discount on the price of rent of the dwelling.
