How to Rent a Moving Truck
Moving can be a stressful event no matter how many possessions you have to move or how far you are moving. It can be confusing to determine if you want to make the move by yourself, request the help of friends, or hire a moving company. No matter which option you choose, be sure to do plenty of research ahead of time to make for a smooth move.
- Determine the size of truck needed, how far you are moving, and for how long you will need the truck. It is always better to get a truck that may be a little larger than needed, rather than one that is too small. Keep in mind that some rental companies do not let their trucks out of the state. It is a good idea to research at least five rental companies; this will allow you to find the best fit for your move.
- Book the truck at least two weeks in advance. The rental company may ask you some questions about your move to determine if you will need any additional tools. For example, moving a piano or boat may require some specialized moving equipment. Even if you have nothing out of the ordinary to move, you might want to rent moving pads and dollies along with the truck, as these can come in handy.
- Bring a valid driver’s license, a credit card, and preferably proof of auto rental insurance when you go to pick up the truck. If your insurance does not cover rentals, most truck rental companies will provide vehicle insurance for an additional fee. You may also want to consider insurance coverage for your belongings. Limited/total loss insurance or assessed value insurance may be available through the rental company. A rental deposit possibly will also be charged but some rental companies just keep your credit card information on file.
- Inspect the moving truck before accepting the rental agreement for any signs of damage such as scratches, dents or signs of wear. Record any of these on the agreement and make sure the rental company accurately reports the mileage and gas level of the truck. Keep all the documents that the rental company gives you in the truck in case you are stopped by a police officer or are required to go through an inspection station. Now that you have successfully rented your moving truck, you are ready to load, drive and make the big switch!
