How to Replace Insulated Windows

How to Repair Foggy Insulated Windows

There are several reasons that insulated windows can get foggy. This common problem will require some work to resolve, but it can restore the view from your window. It also helps protect the home from unnecessary heating or cooling costs from lost air.

While insulated windows can help you to save energy, they may over time become foggy. This is due to the seals failing and condensation getting in. Doing the repairs yourself is a great way for you to save money.

What You’ll Need:

  • Sealing Tape

  • Screwdriver

  • Replacement Glass

  • Pry Bar

  • Caulk

  1. Use your pry bar to take off the side stop trim. Go slowly so you do not split the vertical trim pieces. Take the sash off of the window so you can properly disconnect your springs or ropes in the corners.

  2. Open the window up all of the way to remove the casement. You will take out the top and bottom release clips in order to do this.

  3. Take the sliding pains off as you lift up on your frame. Remove the sash by pulling down.

  4. Take out the frame screws and drive them into the horizontal frame member. Use your rubber mallet to move apart the pieces until the frame separates from its joints.

  5. Take out the glass’s gasket and get rid of the old glass. Run silicone along the edge of the glass. Put in the new gasket and glass and then reinstall your corner screws.

  6. Stop the trim on the inner part f the window. Use a small pry bar to pry the stop. Pull back the nails as well.

  7. Lift up the old glass and scrape out the caulk or tape that remains. Put in new sealing tape around the frame. Put in pure silicone caulk around your window frame.

  8. Install the new glass and snap in the stop trim.
