How to Repair House Gutters

A working gutter system is a must for any home. A leaking gutter can allow large amounts of rainwater to flow over the sides of your home causing both unseen structural and cosmetic damage. When working properly, gutters prevent this by diverting water into the downspout and carrying it away to a proper drainage spot. If a gutter is leaking repair is needed.

Supplies:

  • Steel wool

  • Sandpaper

  • Plastic sheet

  • Scissors

  • Silicone sealant

  • Utility knife

Step One: Examine the gutter and locate the crack.

Step Two: Use a piece of steel wool to clean and etch the surface of the crack. This will allow the patch to adhere to the surface.

Step Three: Trim the replacement patch from a piece of strong plastic. Try and use a piece that is the same type as your gutter system. Trim the patch into a rectangular or square shape. Always extend the patch at least one inch beyond the crack. This will allow for better attachment of the patch to the existing gutter.

Step Four: Apply the patch with the silicone sealant. Spread the sealant generously over the back of the patch and press it firmly into place over the crack.

Step Five: Allow the patch to dry for 24 hours. Use the utility knife to trim away any excess sealant that may have oozed out around the edges. Removing this excess is important because it can block the drainage flow of the water. It will also make your patch look more professional.

Step Six: Use a garden hose to run water through the gutter to be sure the patch isn't leaking. If a leak does occur apply more sealant to the underside of the patch and reseal the edges with more silicone sealant.
