How to Repair Single Speed Bikes

Single speed bikes are an ideal choice for beginning cyclists or just those who do not want to deal with an overly complicated machine. There are no gears to shift, making the bike riding process straight forward and leisurely. Repairing a single speed bike is relatively easy to do, since the user does not have to deal with many gears when trying to access the chain.

Items Needed:

  • Chain tool

  • Replacement chain

  • Bike oil

  • Rag

Instructions:

  1. Find the two bolts on the chain tool and unscrew them. Do not remove the bolts completely.

  2. Take the chain tool and place it on the existing bike chain by lining up the chain openings with the tabs on the chain tool.

  3. Find the one bolt on the chain tool that is not positioned over the cut out notch and tighten it until the bolt sticks out through the bike chain. Push the chain pin so that you can see it extending out through the far side.

  4. Take the bolt and turn it back. It should become removed from the chain.

  5. Wiggle the bike chain. The chain links should come apart in the area where the pin was pushed through. This will loosen the bike chain completely.

  6. Remove the existing bike chain.

  7. Take the replacement chain and place it on the gears. Make sure the "teeth" of the gears fit through the openings in the chain.

  8. Line up both of the loose chain ends in the chain tool. The exposed chain pin should fit inside the chain tool's cut out notch.

  9. Tighten the bolt located over the notch until the pin is back in place in the chain.

  10. Remove the chain tool.

  11. Lubricate the new chain by putting a drop of bike oil on each chain link.

  12. Remove any excess bike oil with a rag.
