How to Repair Vehicle Glass

Repairing vehicle glass may be necessary if you have a crack or chip in your windshield.  To do repairs properly you must make sure that your damage is small and clean before you attempt to fix it with a glass repair kit.

Things You'll Need:

  • Auto glass repair kit

  • Glass cleaner

  • Clean cloth

  • Razor blade

  1. Look at the damaged area in the glass and make sure that it does not exceed one inch in all directions.  Damaged areas that are larger than this should not be repaired at home and will need to be fixed by a trained auto glass specialist.  Also, you will need to know if the damage in your glass is new.  Newly damaged glass is much easier to fix at home then glass that has been allowed to accumulate dirt for a period of time.

  2. Purchase an auto glass repair kit at your local auto supply store and keep in mind that you should start you repair in the shade so that resin does not harden.

  3. Clean the chip or crack in the glass and make sure that it is clean of all dirt and debris.  You can do this with glass cleaning solution and a clean cloth.

  4. Read the instructions carefully in the repair kit that you have purchased so that you know what all the tools are and what they do.  Different repair kits will have different components to allow you to align yourself over the crack before you fill the damage.

  5. Set up the appropriate items for alignment and release resin into the damaged area.  Make sure that resin has completely filled the crack and that there are no bubbles in the resin after you have placed it.

  6. Make sure the finishing film is placed over the area that you have just fixed before you proceed.

  7. Remove any excess resin from the repaired area with a damp cloth and make sure that your car is placed in the sunlight to set the resin for 30 minutes.  If you see excess resin on your glass after it has hardened, you can use a razor blade to remove it.
