How to Repair a Composite Roof

Composite roofs are one of the most popular choices for contractors and roofers because they are strong, install extremely quick and easy and are very cost effective. While composite roofs are very durable and long-lasting, being subjected to the elements will cause wear over time. When this happens, you need to take immediate action to repair your roof before internal damage can occur to your home.

No one wants to face the reality of having a roof leak but it happens quite frequently. Luckily, composite roofs are very simple to fix and as long as you have the correct tools to do the job, you can repair your roof in as little as one Saturday afternoon.

Things You'll Need:

  • Roofing cement

  • Ladder

  • Trowel

  • Hammer

  • Roofing nails (Number of nails depends on the number of shingles being repaired)

  • Pry bar

  • Bricks

  1. Locate the area that needs to be repaired. Note: Do not attempt to work on your roof if the weather conditions are hazardous, especially if it is windy. The higher up from the ground you are, the stronger the wind. Even if the wind is moderate at ground level, it will be substantially windier on the roof. Be safe and take precautions.

  2. Pry the corner of the damaged shingle off with the pry bar. Remove all pieces that are torn or warped.

  3. Remove roofing nails with the hammer. The old nails need to be replaced when you repair the shingles so both materials will wear at the same time.

  4. Use the trowel to smooth a line of roofing cement onto each shingle that was removed. Take each new shingle and place onto the open gaps. Apply pressure to ensure a tight bond. Hammer one nail on each side of the shingle.

  5. Apply additional roofing cement on top of the heads of the nails. This helps stop any leaks from reaching inside your home. Use more cement on any gaps in the shingles. Cement drying time varies; refer to the manufacturer's instructions to be certain.
