How to Repair a Craftsman Small Engine

Craftsman produces various small engine products. Push and riding lawn mowers, leaf blowers and snow blowers are just some of the products the company makes. However, these machines will need maintenance and repair. Even though every power tool is different, there are similar steps to start the diagnosis.

Supplies:

  • Pliers

  • Adjustable wrenches

  • Vise grips

  • Lubricating oil

  • Spark plug remover or ratchet and sockets

  • Screwdrivers

  1. Take off the spark plug from the engine. Follow the user guide to find the spark plug and part number for the replacement. Usually, the spark plug will need to be removed with a socket and ratchet. Clean out the plug housing of the accumulated oil or grime prior to putting in the new plug.

  2. Install a new air filter to devices such as leaf blowers or lawn mowers. Take off the wing nut by holding the air filter in place. Next, remove the old filter and put the new filter in. Clean out the housing of debris and dust prior to putting the cap and wing nut into place.

  3. Clean out the fuel filter once a year. When storing the engine, make sure the fuel lever is in the off position.

  4. Make sure to drain the fuel tank and put in fresh gas if the machine won’t start. Usually, the gas has gone bad if the water has entered into the fuel line. Empty out the tank and begin with new fuel. The repair is now done, and repairing small Craftsman engines in the future will be a snap.
