How to Repair a Flat Tin Roof

Tin roofs are generally durable and cheap to maintain, but they can become damaged and require repair. The roof can become susceptible to rust when the underlying steel is exposed to adverse weather conditions. Gouges and deep scratches on a tin roof can cause structural damage that can eventually lead to water leakages.

Tools:

  • Wire Brush

  • Putty Knife

  • Roofing Cement

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Paint Brush

  • Rust Resistant Primer

  • Mesh Patches

  • Paper towels

Instructions:

  1. Clean the surface of the roof that needs to be repaired, scraping off dirt, old paint and any other debris. Use the putty knife and wire brush to ensure the surface is clear.

  2. Wash away the loose dirt with water and use paper towels to wipe the surface dry. Make sure the rust is completely cleared.

  3. Using the paintbrush spread rust resistant primer over the damaged surface. Let the primer dry naturally.

  4. Spread a thick layer of roofing cement over the primer using the putty knife and place a mesh patch on the wet cement. Ensure the patch is smoothly laid out on the roof.

  5. Apply another layer of cement over the mesh patch and compress it to make sure both layers are joined.

  6. Take the second mesh patch and place it on the cement. Compress it until it is evenly distributed then spread another layer of cement. Use the patty knife to smooth the cement and make it level with the roof surface.

  7. Leave the cement to dry for a period of time. The time it will take depends on the product used. Read the manufacturers instructions.

  8. Paint the dry roof using acrylic paint. Use two layers of paint to give it a smooth finish. Allow the first layer to dry before you apply the second.

  9. Work on the roof during favorable weather conditions. Harsh weather conditions lead to slippery roofs and can cause accidents.
