How to Repair a Mazda MPV Radiator

In 1989 Mazda introduced its Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) in order to compete within the mini van market.  This vehicle has a plastic radiator with an aluminum core that can rust, break or become punctured and then will need to be repaired in order to work properly once again.

Things That You Will Need

  • Radiator anti-leak solution

  • A screwdriver

  • Coolant

  • An air-free plastic welder

  • A plastic welding rod

  • Some sandpaper

  • A pressure test kit

  • Epoxy

  1. Find the location of the leak in your radiator.

  2. Use a pressure test kit to pressure test the radiator to see how it is functioning.

  3. Use high-pressure air or water to clean the radiator’s surface.

  4. Unscrew the metal rings around the edge of the hose to remove it if it is broken, ripped or torn.

  5. Check the hose’s rings.

  6. Replace any damaged rings.

  7. Check the radiator hose connectors for damage.

  8. Replace the radiator cap if it is damaged.

  9. Sand any damaged areas, including punctures and breaks.

  10. Heat the area with the air-free plastic cooler and melt the plastic welding rod into place.  It should take on the radiator’s color.

  11. Repair a break by pressing both sides together with your welding rod in the middle until they bond.

  12. Fill any small holes in the radiator surface with epoxy.

  13. Unscrew the radiator cap and add radiator coolant system sealant.  This will fill any leaks in the aluminum core.

  14. Fill your radiator with the proper coolant/water mixture once you are done working on it.
