How to Repair a Steel Wheel

Steel wheels can be repaired if they acquire scratches, bubbles, dents as well as other damages. The process does require much effort and is simple to complete. Completing the process will allow you to save money and have nice looking wheels again.

Items Needed

  • Scrub brush

  • Bucket

  • Water

  • Liquid dish soap

  • 80 grit sandpaper

  • Cloth

  • 240 grit sandpaper

  • 1000 grit sandpaper

  • Garden hose

  • Paint

  • Primer

  • Clear coat

  1. Clean the steel wheels with a cleaning solution and a scrub brush. Prepare the cleaning solution by filling a bucket with 1 gallon warm water and 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap. Rinse the wheels with water from a garden hose after cleaning them. Allow the wheels to completely dry.

  2. Use 80 grit sandpaper to sand the wheel. Apply pressure and use a circular motion as you sand the surface. After sanding, change over to 240 grit sandpaper. Use the same technique that you use with the 80 grit sandpaper to sand the surface.

  3. Rinse the wheel with clean water and a cloth to completely remove all of the sanding particles. Allow the wheel to dry.

  4. Apply one light coat of primer and then a heavy coat of primer. Allow the light coat to dry for 15 minutes before applying the heavy coat. Allow the coats to dry overnight.

  5. Sand the wheels with very light pressure using 1000 grit sandpaper. Rinse the sanding particles away and allow the wheels to dry.

  6. Apply two coats of paint. Allow the first coat to dry for 15 minutes before applying the second coat. Allow the paint to set overnight.

  7. Cover the wheel with a layer of clear coat. Allow the clear coat to completely dry.
