How to Replace Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles can become damaged with climate or age. When this happens, they should be replaced. An entire new roof may not be necessary, but in order to avoid water damage, it is a good idea to replace any bad or damaged asphalt shingles.
Supplies
- Roof Cement
- Shingles
- Nails
- Pry Bar
- Ladder
- Claw Hammer
- Putty Knife
- Take out the ladder to access the roof. Make sure it is placed securely along the eaves of the house and that the roof is dry.
- Evaluate the roof at least twice a year, spring and fall are good times, to check the roof's overall condition. This can be done when gutters are cleaned. Any loose, damaged or missing shingles must be replaced.
- Take a piece of the damaged shingle to the home improvement store for assistance in making the best color match possible with the existing roof material.
- Purchase the needed supplies.
- Use the ladder to get up on the roof.
- Pull back the shingle just above the damaged piece. This should be done with care to avoid any damage to the existing shingles still in good condition.
- Employ your pry bar or claw hammer to remove any pieces of the damaged shingle.
- Trim the new shingle with a utility knife to the size of the damaged piece.
- Apply roof cement to the new piece and put it in place. Use a hammer to nail it down so that it remains secure.
- Use a putty knife to apply roof cement to the existing shingles that were raised during the repair process.
Always make replacements during warmer sunny days. The asphalt shingles are easier to bend in warm temperatures, resulting in less damage to existing shingles. The warmer temperatures also help the new pieces seal quicker to the existing roof shingles.
