How to Replace Double Hung Windows

  1. Determine the dimensions of the window. Using a measuring tape, measure the width, length and center of the existing window from inside the framing.

  2. Record the measurements and place them in a safe location.

  3. Purchase a double hung window kit from a building supply company using the dimensions established in step 1.

  4. Disconnect the innermost side section of the window stop from the window jambs, using the hammer and chisel.

  5. Repeat step 4 for the bottom window sash, top window sash and the center window stop.

  6. Remove the old weather stripping using the utility knife.

  7. Install the new top window sash by connecting it to the frame with the provided brackets and screws.

  8. Measure four inches from the top of both sides of the window frame using the measuring tape. Mark each location with a pencil.

  9. Measure two inches from the bottom edge of the installed top sash using the measuring tape. Mark this location on one side of the framing only.

  10. Determine a center point between the top and bottom markings using the measuring tape. Mark this location with the pencil.

  11. Install the provided brackets onto the four marked locations.

  12. Connect the provided lower sash blocks onto the window framing using the nail gun.

  13. Install the jamb liner brackets on opposite sides of the window framing. Secure the jamb liner brackets with the provided screws.

  14. Measure the jamb liners. Cut them to fit inside the window framing, if necessary.

  15. Insert the jamb liners into the jamb liner brackets.

  16. Slide the pivot pin of the lower sash into the jamb liner groove.

  17. Position the lower sash into the closed position. Ensure that the window opens and closes properly.
