How to Replace Exterior Trim Garden Doors

Exterior trim on garden doors accentuate the look and feel of any home décor and are vital for covering up gaps between the door frame and the wall. If the exterior trim around your garden doors is beginning to look dull, replacing it will improve the look of the whole area.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pry bar

  • Hammer

  • Tape measure

  • Miter saw

  • Exterior-grade caulk

  • Trim nailer and nails

  1. Use the pry bar to take off the old trim around the garden doors. The end of the pry bar can be tapped into the outer edge of the trim with a hammer. Pull off the existing trim carefully.

  2. Take the tape measure and lengthen it across the top of the doorway. From inner corner to inner corner, mark the measurements on a piece of trim. Leave roughly 3 to 6 inches of extra trim beyond each measurement mark.

  3. Grab the piece of trim used for the measurements and place it facing up onto the miter saw’s platform. Position the trim so the bottom edge is facing the saw blade and one of the marks is directly underneath the blade. Swivel the blade roughly 45 degrees outward from the mark on the piece of trim and lock the angle in place. Continue cutting the trim.

  4. Repeat step three for the second mark located on the piece of trim.

  5. Place the cut piece of trim along the top of the doorway. To do so properly, place the trim so the bottom is even with the doorway edge and the two angled cuts are pointing up and away from the doorway’s upper corners.

  6. Nail the piece of trim into the trim by securing it with trim nails about 10 or 12 inches apart.

  7. Take the tape measure and measure for the approximate lengths for the two vertical edges of the doorway. Cut the top ends of the trim pieces with the miter saw, so these will fit tightly against the cut parts of the top piece of trim. The bottoms of the vertical trim pieces are straight cuts.

  8. Apply a small to medium sized beat of exterior-grade caulk all around the trim to seal the joints.
