How to Replace Loose Shower Tiles
It is not uncommon for shower tiles to become loose over a period time due to normal wear and tear. This is more than likely due to moisture building up behind the tiles and it is a problem that should be corrected immediately.
Damaged or loose shower tiles should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent the problem from becoming worse.
- Use a metal putty knife to remove all the grout around the tiles that are loose. This should be done by inserting the blade of the knife against the grout and using both hands to firmly push it forward while pressing down. Remove as much of the grout as you possible can without causing any damage to the other tiles surrounding the damaged ones.
- Place your putty knife into the space where you have just removed the grout and wedge the blade beneath the loose tile and gently lift it up. If you have trouble getting the tile to come loose gently tap the handle of the knife with a hammer.
- Use your putty knife to remove any mortar that may be left on the surface after the tile has been successfully removed.
- Use your putty knife to spread thinset mortar on the back of a piece of replacement tile.
- Firmly press the replacement tile into place.
- Continue to remove and replace any other loose tiles.
- Allow the mortar to dry overnight.
- Use a grout float to spread a layer of grout over the new tiles.
- Use a damp towel to remove any excess grout.
- Allow the grout to set for a couple of days before using shower.
