How to Replace a Car Water Pump

Learning the basics of auto repair can save you from burning holes in your pocket. Replacing a car water pump can be very pricey, but thankfully there is an option where a car owner can do this procedure themselves. Though this process can be time consuming, the end reward is well worth it.

What you will need:

  • Drain pan

  • Car jack

  • Water pump

  • Gasket

  • Gasket sealer

  • Wrench set

  • Screw driver

  1. Use your car jack to hoist your car up for access underneath the car.

  2. Place the drain pan under the radiator plug.

  3. Use a screw driver and remove the radiator plug.

  4. Allow the coolant to drain out before proceeding.

  5. Remove everything in the way of the car's water pump. Use your screwdriver to remove the alternator, belts, harmonic balancer, power steering, and cooling reservoir in order to get to your car's water pump.

  6. Use the wrench to remove the four bolts that keep the water pump attached to the car. After the bolts are loosened, the water pump should easily come off of the car.

  7. Use silicone and seal a gasket to your new water pump.

  8. Check for rusts before attaching your new water pump. If there is any rust detected, simply scrape it off and begin attaching your new water pump by using the bolts and screwdriver.

  9. Replace all previously detached parts in the opposite order that your took them off. Make sure that they are placed the exact way you found them unless they were placed incorrectly in the beginning, in which you should correct.
