How to Replace a Wheelbarrow Wheel

Wheelbarrows are a must have for any landscaper because they allow you to move heavy materials from one place to another with ease. Examples of some of these items  include bricks, bark and crushed rocks. If one of the wheels on the wheelbarrow gets damaged, it can be replaced instead of having to buy a new wheelbarrow.

  1. Assess the damage to the wheel. Place it on a flat surface so that you can check the tire.

  2. Use pliers to loosen up the tire brackets. The brackets are what connect the axle and tire to the front braces. They are connected by either screws or nuts depending on the type of wheelbarrow you have. Remove the screws or nuts so that you can take the axle out of the old tire. Set them to the side for future use.

  3. Determine the distance between the front braces and the axles. This area is known as the hub.

  4. Check the chart that came with the wheelbarrow. It should have a bushing chart that tells you how many are needed for the braces. Depending on the measurement that you took for the hub, you may not need any bushings. Follow the bushing chart and compare the measurements listed to be sure. If needed, use a screwdriver to remove any old bushings off the front frames and place new ones on with a hammer.

  5. Clean the axle. Use soap, hot water and a scrub brush to get rid of any dirt on the wheel axle. Next, dry the axle off with a cloth and apply oil to keep it from accumulating any rust.

  6. Attach the new wheel. Position the new wheel in alignment with the front braces and axle holes in the braces. Place the axle in the holes of the braces and the wheel. Fasten the screws or nuts back on the axle.
