How to Replace an Oil Filter Housing Gasket

The process of replacing the protective sealing gasket located between the oil filter enclosure can better be achieved simultaneously as you do your oil change. Note that the gasket hardens over time thus allowing oil seepage through the seal. Any oil leak between the filter and its housing filter cap requires immediate replacement of the housing gasket.

Tools

  • Flat-Head screw driver

  • Multiple size wrench set

  • New oil filter

  • An oil pan

Procedure

  • Empty the drain pan by draining the oil from the engine. Ensure the battery is disconnected. The main drive-belt should also be removed including the upper idler pulley.

  • Disconnect the VANOS oil line and move on to remove the alternator. Using the correct wrench size, open the filter housing bolts to gain access to the gasket housing.

  • Remove the old oil filter gasket and replace it with a new one. Return the filter housing bolts, reconnect the VANOS oil line and proceed to re-install the alternator. Carry out any appropriate repair and maintenance to any parts that you deem requires your attention.

  • Slot the upper idler pulley into its groove.

  • Install towards the back of the main drive belt.

  • Check to confirm that there are no cracks or weak points along its entire ring length. If you discover weak points or find the belt to have sagged, use your own judgment either to replace it or maintain the old one.

  • Check your battery to ensure the acid is at the right level. Clean its terminals using a smooth sand paper and apply thin body cream before re-connecting it back.

  • Re-fill the engine with fresh oil.

  • Dispose of the used oil at an authorized drop-off facility.
