How to Replace the Glass in a French Door
Some homeowners are choosing to replace their patio doors with French doors to enhance the appearance of their home. They must be properly maintained to keep them looking their best. There may come a time when the glass in the door needs to be replaced, but this is something you can do yourself.
Steps to Replacing Glass in French Door
- Remove the trim around the door by using a utility knife to cut the paint from around it. Then you need to use a putty knife to pry up the trim. Be careful when removing the trim so you do not damage it during the removal process.
- Label the trim as you take it off because you want to put it back in the same place it was removed from. Use a marker and label it on the back.
- Use a tape measure to measure the inside of the doorframe.
- Lay the pane of glass down on a large piece of particleboard.
- Use a grease pencil to put the measurements on the glass.
- Take out your glass cutter and place a drop of oil on the blade.
- Follow the lines drawn on the glass to cut the glass to size. Refrain from pressing down too hard on the glass because it could break under pressure.
- Carefully slide the piece of glass to the edge of the particleboard and slightly tap on the glass to remove the piece of glass you cut.
- Use a putty knife to remove any caulking in the setting of the door.
- Apply some latex caulking around the frame of the door, which will hold the glass in place.
- Put the glass back inside the setting.
- Replace the trim and remember to refer to the labels on the back.
