How to Replace the Protective Finish for Outdoor Wicker Chairs

Wicker furniture is a beautiful and affordable option for your outdoor space. Most wicker furniture comes with a weather-resistant finish that will protect it from the elements. However, this finish may wear off over time and cause your furniture to become discolored. You can prevent this by replacing this protective finish.

  1. Take off any cushions that are on your wicker furniture and clean them using a standard garden hose, high pressure sprayer and a mild detergent.

  2. Sand the surface of your wicker furniture using a medium grit sandpaper to remove any remaining protective finish that is left on the surface of your wicker furniture. Be sure that it is sanded down to a dull finish.

  3. Wipe down your wicker furniture with a clean, wet rag to remove any dust or debris that is on the chair from the protective coating that you have sanded away.

  4. Tape off any areas of your furniture that you do not want the protective finish to be applied to such as decorative or fabric elements that do not need to be protected.

  5. Purchase a spray polyurethane varnish that can be easily applied to the surface of your wicker furniture. You can purchase products from a hardware or home improvement store.

  6. Spray down the surface of your wicker furniture with this spray varnish in a light coat. Be sure to keep the nozzle of your spray varnish at least six inches away from the surface of your furniture to avoid drips.

  7. Allow the varnish to dry for at least two hours or until it feels dry to the touch.

  8. Apply a second coat of varnish to the area using the same application technique.

  9. Allow the wicker furniture to dry overnight before replacing the cushions or using the furniture.
