How to Report a Lost Social Security Card

Unfortunately you cannot report a lost or stolen social security card. You can only replace it and will have to monitor your personal finances to make sure you don't suffer any identity theft. Replacing a social security card and monitoring your finances won't be as difficult as you might think.

Things You'll Need:

  • Identifications

  • Credit Card Statements

  • Credit Report Statements

  • Copy Machine

  1. Drive to your local social security office and talk with a representative about replacing your card. There will probably be a few pieces of paperwork like a SS-5 form that you need to fill out. You should be able to fill the forms out at the office in a few minutes. Make sure you have a few forms of identification to prove to the representative who you are.

  2. Check your credit card statement and credit reports for a few months after you've lost your social security card. Make sure there are no unusual charges or jumps in scores. Call the credit card company immediately if you notice any unusual charges. They might send you a new card or investigate the problem themselves.

  3. Make a copy of your new card to put in your wallet or purse and leave the original in a safe place at home. Obviously you don't want to lose the copied card, but that's a lot better than loosing the original. The copied card should just be used as a reference just in case you cannot remember your social security number. Also remember that some states only allow you to replace your social security card a few times in your lifetime.
