How to Request a State Tax Extension
After paying taxes the whole year, the tax refund that is given at the beginning of the year often is greatly anticipated. It takes time to review, edit and file taxes, and even when planning ahead many people find they need a tax extension. Getting an extension on your state taxes is easier than it sounds.
- Determine the amount of time you will need for an extension. There is only a certain amount of time that the government will allow for state taxes to be filed, and once that time is exceeded one will be penalized for filing state taxes late. Gather all of the tax paperwork appropriate for filling state taxes and determine if you will be able to sufficiently file all of the paper work on time. If time is running short request an extension.
- Research the state's extension requirements. Many states will require that completed forms are mailed in to obtain a state tax extension. Obtain the appropriate forms from the state’s tax and finance department via United States postal mail or access them through the appropriate website.
- Complete and submit the tax extension forms corresponding to the state's requirements. Each set of forms received will come with independent instructions for completion that should be followed to the letter. At times the instructions can be difficult to follow. Help can be obtained through a local accountant or a state tax representative. If the forms are not filed in the appropriate manner or all the instructions are not followed a state tax extension will not be granted. When finished completing all of the tax extension forms submit the forms to the appropriate office. File the extension prior to the stated deadline to avoid incurring fines and or penalties.
