How to Restore a Carpet After Water Damage

If you have ever experienced a flood or have dealt with a broken water heater, then you know how important it is for you to get your carpet restored or replaced as soon as possible. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may have to replace more than the carpet. There are several ways that you can replace the carpet yourself, but most people choose to have a professional do the work for them.

  1. Identify where the water is coming from. This is one of the most important steps because if certain types of water came in contact with the carpet, then there is no way that you can salvage it. Certain waters, such as rain water or from pipes in your home, can be cleaned up, but if the carpet has come in contact with sewage or groundwater then the carpet should be replaced as soon as possible.

  2. Stop any water flow to avoid having to repair any more damage that may be caused. The best thing that you can do if you have any problems is to get the input of a professional plumber.

  3. Disinfect the area that was flooded by using special cleaning supplies. It is important that you kill any bacteria to prevent you from becoming ill. Ventilation is also important because it will prevent mold from growing while you clean up the mess.

  4. Set up large fans to blow on the flooded area for up to 3 days. This will help the carpet dry and keep the foundation under the carpet from getting any damage. Also, keep people from walking on the affected area so that the airflow is not disturbed.
