How to Rotate Horse Wormers
It's important for horses to take wormers, as they help fight off intestinal parasites. There are certain wormers that kill certain types of worms. That is why you need to rotate wormers on a regular basis so you know all types of intestinal parasites are killed.
Things You'll Need:
- Pencil
- Paper
- Calendar
- Discuss with a veterinarian about what types of wormers are needed for your horse. Each type of wormer will probably be needed for a total of two months, but not used in back to back months. A different type of wormer is usually given to the horse at the beginning of each month. Make sure you write down when each type of wormer is needed on a calendar. This will help you stay better organized.
- Give your horse the first wormer on the first day of the next month after you've received the wormers from the veterinarian. The veterinarian should have also given you thorough instructions on how to administer the wormer to the horse. Make sure you mark off on the calendar what type of wormer you gave the horse.
- Administer the right kind of wormer on the first of every month. Make sure you have the wormers organized in a safe place. You obviously don't want these medicines around small children or other animals.
- Order a new batch of wormers after your current supply runs out. Usually veterinarians will supply you with a year worth of wormers to start. They won't probably supply you with another batch of wormers until you've used the entire first batch.
