How to Run Multiple Boarding Kennels

Pets are beloved family members for many people and when they go out of town they want to know that their pets are well taken care of. Many people will use a boarding kennel to ensure that their pets are watched over. Running multiple boarding kennels is a great business venture for someone that loves animals.

  • Write a business plan. A business plan is extremely important to any business, especially one with multiple locations. A business plan will give you a clear idea of everything you need to focus on in regards to your boarding kennels. A great business plan will land you an excellent business loan.

  • Obtain permits and licenses. Be sure to check with your local municipality on all the permits and licenses you will need to run your dog kennels. This should include a Tax ID and business license.

  • Find good locations. If you are running multiple boarding kennels you want each one to serve a different area of the population. Do not have your locations too close to each other.

  • Hire a great staff. Make sure that your staff is competent and well trained. If a customer receives bad service from one of your employees they are not likely to return to any of your locations. You will also need to hire an experienced accountant to keep track of all of the accounts from each location.

  • Contact several vets and animal clinics. Each one of your boarding kennels should have a relationship with a vet or 24-hour animal clinic in case you are caring for a pet that becomes ill or injured. The vet or animal clinic should be close to the location of your boarding kennels and all staff members should be aware of what to do if one of the pets you are caring for needs medical attention.

  • Advertise your pet boarding kennels. Taking on a business with multiple locations is a big risk. A good advertising and marketing plan will ensure that you have customers and the cash flow you need to keep each location running.
