Learning how to use a portable computer without the battery can extend the battery lifespan up to six or more months. This is essential for many portable computer users who are concerned about getting the most out of their battery. There are only a few steps to using a portable computer without the battery. With these steps and precautions using the portable computer without the battery can be as seamless as using it with the battery.

  1. Purchase an AC power cord for the portable computer. Portable computers are sold new with a power cord; however, if your computer is a pre-owned model a power cord may not have been included. Be sure to order a power cord that is specific for the make and model of the portable computer because universal cords are not standard.

  2. Turn the portable computer over so that the battery, which is usually located on the bottom of the computer, is facing you. Remove the battery from the portable computer.

  3. Store the battery in a cool dry location. A battery can be stored for several months without any damage as long as the area is free of moisture and the battery is protected. To protect the battery, you may wrap the battery in a towel or store in a moisture-proof laptop case.

  4. Connect the AC power cord to the portable computer. When the connection is secured plug the opposite end of the power cord into a nearby electrical outlet.

  5. Turn the portable computer on. The portable computer will now run off of the electrical power cord.
