How to Safely Fill and Transport Gasoline

Gasoline is a fuel that is used for many reasons by homeowners. It is needed for lawnmowers, leaf blowers, power washers and chainsaws, to name a few. Gasoline is very flammable, so there are certain precautions you must take to safely fill and transport gasoline.

You Will Need:

  • Gasoline can

  • Chain or rope to secure the gasoline can during transport

  1. Place the gas can on the ground at the gas station. Do not fill the gas can while it is in a vehicle.

  2. Follow all posted regulations at the gas station, such as do not smoke while pumping gas.

  3. Remove the gas can's screw-on spout or fill cap.

  4. Place the gas pump’s nozzle in the hole of the gas can.

  5. Begin filling the gas can, watching not to overfill it. If it is designed to hold one gallon of gasoline, only fill it with one gallon of gas or less.

  6. Replace the gas can’s cap or nozzle. Make sure that it is screwed down completely and tightly. Any gaps can allow gasoline to spill.

  7. Place the gasoline can in your vehicle. It is best to place it in the open bed of a truck, but the trunk of a car will do if you do not have access to a truck. Never transport gasoline in the cab or inside of a truck or car as the gasoline fumes are harmful if inhaled.

  8. Secure the gasoline can to the vehicle so the gasoline container cannot move around or spill while being transported. Do not use bungee cords as they can stretch to allow the gas can to tip over.

  9. Remove the gasoline can from your vehicle as soon as you arrive at your destination.
