How to Save Money on DIY Car Repairs

Car repairs can be very costly if you take your car to an auto shop.  Doing the repairs yourself can save you a lot of money but sometimes that is just not enough of a savings.  Knowing a few tricks and places to go can save you even more money.

  • Search the Internet.  Message boards about car repairs can help answer questions you may have about a repair you need to do.  You could find what someone else did to fix a problem they had with their vehicle.  This could help save you time and money since you will not have replace part after part to find why your car is not functioning correctly.

  • Take you car to a tech school.  Having a student work on your car can save you loads of money.  The teachers make sure that the work is done correctly so it is not likely you will have any problems.  You may even be able to use some of their equipment to repair your car yourself.

  • Find your manual or buy a new one.  This book will help you troubleshoot many problems you may encounter with your vehicle.  If you cannot find your car’s manual, you can try getting a Chilton manual.  It is full of information on different vehicles and can help with many repairs.

  • Purchase the parts you need from a retail store or a salvage yard instead of buying it from the dealership.  Dealerships charge much more than a retail store.  Salvage yards supply very cheap used parts.

  • Borrow tools that you need.  Tools can be rented from retail stores or you can ask a friend if you can borrow a tool that they may have at home.  Purchasing tools can get very expensive, especially if you think you will only need the tool once.  Renting tools can cost you more if you need the tools often but can save you money at the present time.
