How to Save Money on Healthy Food

Eating healthy does not have to break your budget, even though some healthy foods are expensive. When you begin to plan your meals with healthy alternatives, you will realize that it really isn't as expensive as you might think. Once you learn how to save money on healthy food, your body and your pocketbook will thank you.

  • Purchase frozen berries instead of paying more for fresh ones. Frozen raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries are just as nutritious and buying them from the frozen food section will save you money.

  • Buy large boxes of quick cook oatmeal instead of the single serving packages, which are more expensive. Add your own sugar and cinnamon for a little flavor.

  • Purchase canned or dried meats and fish instead of fresh cuts to stretch your grocery dollar.

  • Consider buying bruised produce and cutting off the bad areas. Many stores offer damaged fruit a lot cheaper than undamaged.

  • Shop for healthy staples and buy these in bulk. Save even more if you purchase them on sale.

  • Save leftover food to use in other meals such as casseroles or soups.

  • Plan out your meals before going grocery shopping. By making a list and sticking to it, you are a lot less likely to buy on impulse.

  • Take advantage of in-store circulars, coupons and grocery ads.

  • Locate a farmers market in your area to buy in season fruits and vegetables at a reduced cost.

  • Plant your own vegetable or herb garden and you can take these items off of your grocery shopping list.

  • Cook smaller portions of meat and prepare extra dishes made from grains, eggs or vegetables.

  • Purchase several loaves of bread from a bakery outlet and freeze until needed.

  • Buy generic brands of healthy foods. These are less expensive than brand name foods and they have the same nutritional value and taste.
