How to Save More Money on Your Utility Costs
Given current economic times, the need to save money wherever you can has never been greater. One of the biggest monthly costs that families face is their utility bill. There are simple steps that you can take to save more money on your utility bill each month. In addition to having more money in your pocket, you will also help save our precious natural resources.
- Replace your light bulbs. To save on pocket costs, replace the light bulbs that you use the most. Install a bulb with the lowest wattage needed. Choose Energy Star rated bulbs; these use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs, and last nearly ten times longer.
- Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can turn the heat down automatically at night. It can also turn the heat up a few degrees before you are due to arrive home from work. Lowering the temperature in your house when you are asleep or not at home can save you a significant amount of money each month. By using a programmable thermostat, all you have to do is program the times that you want the heat settings adjusted, and it does the work automatically.
- Adjust your thermostat settings. Turn your heat down a few degrees in the winter. If you get chilly, add layers rather than turning up the heat. In the summer, turn the thermostat up a few degrees. Your body most likely will not notice the change, but your wallet will.
- Install a radiant barrier in your attic. This is a reflective material that is generally installed in the attic, either over insulation or under the roof. It helps deflect the suns rays and keeps heat out during the summer. It also helps to stop heat from escaping and keeps heat in during the winter. This can help cut down on your heating and cooling costs.
- Consider replacing your appliances. Appliances manufactured before 2001 have significantly higher day-to-day operating costs. Current models have an Energy Star rating. By purchasing a newer Energy Star rated model, you can cut your operating costs by as much as 40 percent.
- Repair your window and door seals. This is an easy task that you can do yourself. Most hardware stores sell window and door seal kits. You will see a dramatic decrease in your utility bills once you properly seal your windows and doors.
- Reduce your water costs. Take short showers rather than baths. Replace your shower head with a model that uses less water for additional savings. If you have any leaky faucets in your house, take the time to repair them. Even a tiny leak can add up over time.
