How to Search for Government Housing Grants
Buying a home is expensive. With today's strict lending guidelines, banks and credit unions are requiring that new home buyers make a larger down payment than ever before. In some cases, homeowners are required to put as much as 20 percent down when applying for a loan. With these lending requirements, government housing grants are in high demand.
- Consider your age. Home buyers who meet certain age guidelines are eligible for housing grants from the federal government. The United States Administration on Aging offers government housing grants to senior citizens who are buying a new home or piece of real estate.
- Obtain a minority government housing grant. There are many government housing grant programs that are designed to help minorities purchase homes. Organizations such as the Department of Public and Indian Housing, as well as the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity offer many housing grants to members of a minority race who meet certain grant requirements.
- Research occupational grants. The government offers grant opportunities to those who work within certain fields. Farmers, for instance, are eligible for federal housing grants through the Department of Agriculture. If you are a farmer who is looking to purchase a farm, consider inquiring about a grant through the Rural Housing Service. Depending on where you are looking to purchase your land, you may be eligible for a secondary housing grant.
- Take advantage of veteran benefits. The government has developed many housing grants that are designed to help veterans of the United States military. Contact the Office of Veterans Affairs to learn about the housing grants that are available through the VA.
