How to Select Organic Seeds
Just as organic foods in the grocery stores are gaining in popularity, so are organic seeds for gardening. Many gardeners are taking a fresh look at organics, pondering about the logic of using clean, pesticide free seeds for a good start on their garden. It only makes sense to grow fresh vegetables and fruits with organically grown seeds. Consider a few tips for how to select organic seeds and where to find them.
Purchasing Organic Seeds
Start making a list of organic seeds you wish to purchase for your vegetable garden, herbs beds and flower gardens. Once you locate a couple of good sources for organic seeds, you should narrow down your list to specific varieties or absolute favorites.
Searching for seeds locally are an easier and faster way to purchase. Check out the closest nurseries in your area and some of the big garden centers. Most all retail gardening stores carry some organic seeds.
You may find larger selections of organic seeds online at websites that specialize in nothing but organics. A lot of the local retail stores carry organics, but normally do not have an impressive selection.
Selecting Organic Seeds
Look for seeds that are marked as "open pollinated". Not that there is anything wrong with any other type of organic seed, but this label indicates that bees, wind or other natural methods were used for pollination.
Buy certified organic. A valid organic supplier, both online and retail stores should be able to supply documentation of organic certification. If you are paying for organic, make sure you are truly getting organic.
Check for broken, crushed, rotten or molded seeds and contact the retailer for an exchange.
