How to Select a Consulting Company for a Project

Consulting companies work with businesses for a number of reasons. Consultants offers expertise and knowledge on a product or technology unfamiliar to businesses. Hiring a consulting firm can be a substantial investment for the business needing the services; therefore, selecting the right expert for a project is crucial. The right consultant adds value to project, while a poor choice can lead a business in the wrong direction and fail to achieve project goals.

  1. Develop a project plan and outline the primary reasons for selecting a consulting company. Budget constraints may require a low-cost consulting bid. Time constraints and strict deadlines require finding a firm able to start immediately. Specialty knowledge or skills about technology requires an expert in the field.

  2. Determine the scope of skills required to complete the project successfully. Some projects require a brief consultation from a consultant with general knowledge. More technical projects require experts on the subject. Consider their communication abilities if they need to make project presentations to upper management.

  3. Verify a consulting company’s recent accomplishments and professional references. Ask about support staff for the consultant working the project. Will there be a team of people working on the project, or does a single person handle the entire project? A strong support staff reduces workload by distributing research and other tasks.

  4. Perform an interview with the consultant who will work on your project. It is common practice for a consulting company to send in a senior-level consultant, win the bid and use a less-experienced person for the job. This practice can cost businesses time and money and result in poor project results.

  5. Look for a consulting company who manages the project from start-to-finish. This includes design, development, testing, integration and project implementation. A client should be able to pick up with the project’s implementation after the consultant completes the job. This requires the consulting team to educate the people who are going to use the technology or ideas developed by the consultant.

  6. Use a contract to outline the details of the project. Be specific in the scope of the work, timelines and terms and conditions. Regularly monitor the consultant’s progress throughout the project.
