How to Sell Rare Model Kits

A collector who wants to sell a rare model kit should use different advertising sources to try find a buyer. The best sources to use depend on the type of model kit the collector has to sell. Using websites and other online resources as well as print advertisements can help the collector find a buyer quickly.

  • Determine how much you want to ask a buyer to pay for your rare model kit. Depending on the type of kit you want to sell and the current demand, you may want to ask more than you actually want. This leaves you room to negotiate with the buyer, in case you need to drop the price to make a sale.

  • Place an advertisement in the newspaper to sell the model kit. Include a description of the kit as well as the asking price. Leave a contact number and the hours that a buyer can call you to inquire about the kit.

  • Create an online advertisement. For example, if you are selling a rare car model kit, find websites that you can place a listing. Read through current ads on the website to help you write up the listing.

  • Sell your rare model kit on an auction website. Depending on the kit, you may be able to create a bidding war between potential buyers. This will drive up the price and help you make more on the sale.

  • Put an advertisement in a collector’s magazine. For example, if you have a rare train model kit for sale, look for a train collector magazine for your ad. Contact the advertising manager to discuss your listing and find out how much it costs. You may be able to negotiate a lower rate if you list your ad for more than one issue. If you make a sale, call the ad manager right away to cancel the next month’s listing.
