How to Sell Used Car Parts Privately

If you have extra car parts that you no longer need, consider selling them privately through various means.  This is a great way to make some extra money, as well as help others find reasonably priced automobile parts for their cars.  From mirrors to seat covers and engines to rims, you can sell any car part privately.

1. Gather information about the vehicle that had the parts on it originally.  You will need to know the year, make and model of your car.  You may also want to make notes of any colors, material or sizes, if necessary, depending on the specific part.

2. Find the best place to sell your vehicle parts.  You can place an advertisement in the AutoTrader magazine, submit a classified ad in your local newspaper or sell your car parts online.  Online sites that will help you sell your car parts include eBay Motors and craigslist.

3. Take several pictures of the car part you wish to sell and write a description of the part.  Include the types of vehicles it may be used for and how long the part has been used.

4. Determine how much you want to get for the car part.  Be sure to do a little research by looking up other similar parts.  You do not want to overprice your car part and you do not want to give it away, either.

5. Submit the necessary information to the magazine or newspaper.

6. Fill in the required information for the online website, if you are selling the car parts online.

7. Pay any fees for your advertisement.  Some sites may allow you to post ads for free.  Try these sites first. Then, if you cannot sell your item, consider the other ways to sell your car parts.

8. Talk with potential buyers via email or on the phone, whichever method you chose to place in your advertisement.

9. Agree to a price and a location for the buyer to pick up the car part.  Some people prefer to ship the item or meet in a centralized location, rather than having a stranger go to your house.

10. Accept cash payments and give the car part to the buyer.  Be cautious if accepting any checks or money orders.  PayPal is another safe way to collect money for items sold to a private party.
