How to Send an Internet Fax

Internet faxing is a great solution for people who are always on the go or never near a fax machine.  By using the Internet to send your faxes instead of a traditional machine, you are able to instantly transmit documents that are saved on your computer.

  1. Research the different Internet faxing companies available on the Internet.  There are several companies that offer these services, and each one is different in monthly subscription costs and number of pages allowed.  Signing up with a company is necessary to be able to send faxes online.

  2. Choose a company to sign up with.  Consider things such as cost, overage charges and customer satisfaction.  Look for companies that have great customer reviews; these companies have great service and timely delivery.  Go through the sign up process on the company’s website.

  3. Install the program offered by the Internet faxing company, if necessary.  Some companies have exclusive software for sending faxes, while others allow you to use any email program.

  4. Open your email program or the faxing company’s software and click on the button to compose a new message, much the same manner as you would when sending an email.

  5. Put the recipient’s fax number in the “To” text box followed by the extension designated by the faxing company.  Leave out all dashes or punctuation.  Instructions for how to send a fax differs between companies, so refer to the website for specifics.

  6. Put the fax header in the subject line, and write a brief description of the fax in the body of the email.  This information will be available to the recipient when they receive the fax.  The information in these areas serves as the fax’s cover letter.

  7. Attach the document to be faxed using the same procedure you would when attaching a document to an email.  If using a company’s software, follow the onscreen instructions for attaching the documents.

  8. Send the fax by pushing the appropriate button in either your email program or faxing software.  The faxing company will either print the email and fax it using traditional methods, or send the fax through to the recipient’s online faxing number.
