How to Set Up Art Websites

The popularity of the Internet has opened a brand new world of marketing for most people. Now it seems that without a website a business is more likely to fail. For artists this is doubly true. Knowing how to set up art websites, or finding someone else who can, is vital to every up-and-coming artist. A digital art gallery can bring in thousands of costumers.

  1. Search for a domain name and hosting company. The domain name will be the web address for the art website. The hosting company will provide the space for the digital gallery. There are free hosting sites, but these often have pop-ups and other ads. These ads will take attention away from the artwork.

  2. Choose the layout for the website. This can be done by using a pre-made web template or by building the site using website building software. There are thousands of free web templates online, and higher quality templates ranging from a few pennies to a few dollars. Website building software can be found through freeware sites, or bought from a number of different companies.

  3. Take pictures of the artwork to be featured on the site, and then arrange them on the desired web pages. The artwork should flow easily down the page, and captions mentioning what inspired the piece can be added.

  4. Upload the save web page files to the hosting company account. The files uploaded to the hosting company will normally go live instantly, and can be viewed immediately. If not, the website owner may have to push a "Publish" button to take the website live.

  5. Spread the word about the new art website. Backlinking, bookmarking, social media sites, and directories can all drive more traffic to the new website.
