How to Set Up Cable Internet

Cable Internet is a great way to get high-speed Internet and cable television without having to set up multiple services. Since both the Internet and the cable come from the same location in your house, it is a simple task to set up after starting the service with your provider.

What You Will Need

  • Cable box

  • Coaxial cables

  • Cable splitter

  • Cable modem

  • Ethernet cable

  1. Find the location of the cable outlets in your home. If you plan to have the cable box and modem in the same room, you will need to have a splitter to split the cable signal.

  2. Connect a coaxial cable to the cable port on the room’s wall.

  3. Connect the other end of the cable to the “Input” port on your splitter.

  4. Connect a second coaxial cable to the back of your television.

  5. Connect the other end of the second coaxial cable to the “Cable Out” port on the back of the cable box.

  6. Connect a third coaxial cable to one of the “Output” ports on the splitter.

  7. Connect the other end of the third coaxial cable to the “Cable In” port located on the back of the cable box.

  8. Connect a fourth coaxial cable to the “Input” port on the back of the cable modem. Connect the other end of the fourth coaxial cable to one of the additional “Output” ports on the splitter.

  9. Attach the Ethernet cable to the back of the cable modem. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port located on the back of the computer.

  10. Attach the power adapter to the modem and plug into the wall.

  11. Turn the power on to the modem.

  12. Start the computer and insert the CD that came with the cable equipment.

  13. Follow the prompts from the CD until finished.

  14. Open a web browser to test the Internet connection.
