How to Use Network Attached Storage

How to Set Up Network Attached Storage

With traditional network file sharing, if someone logs out of the account sharing the information or shuts the computer down, the data becomes inaccessible to the rest of the network. Network attached storage provides all the file sharing benefits of a networked computer, with the added benefits of a reduced energy cost and simplified access.

Things you will need:

  • Network attached storage device

  • At least one hard drive

  • Ethernet cable long enough to reach from device to your router

  • Standard Phillips screwdriver

  • User manual for Network Attached Storage Device

While specific steps may vary between models and manufacturers, setting up a network attached storage device is similar for most devices.

  1. Discharge any static by touching a nearby metal object before beginning.

  2. Open the bay on the network attached storage device that is intended for drive storage.

  3. Remove hard drive from packaging, holding the hard drive on the sides to prevent damage to the main board.

  4. Connect the drive within the bay of the network attached storage device. This is typically done by connecting the power and data plugs to the drive or by sliding the drive into the harness included in the bay.

  5. Secure the drive with the screws or clips provided.

  6. Close the bay of the network attached storage device.

  7. Repeat steps 1–6, as needed to add additional storage.

  8. Place the network attached storage device in the location desired.

  9. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the network attached storage device.

  10. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your router.

  11. Plug the power cord for the network attached storage device into the device.

  12. Plug the power cord for the network attached storage device into an electrical outlet or surge protector.

  13. Toggle the power switch on the network attached storage device to the “on” position.

  14. Find the default network address assigned to your network attached storage device, located in the user’s manual.

  15. Power on a computer connected to the same network as your network attached storage device.

  16. Open your preferred Web browser.

  17. Type the default address listed in your user manual into the address bar to access and configure the device to your specific network needs and preferences.

After setting any security and protocol settings within the device, the network attached storage should be available for users on the network as a network share. If needed, refer to your user manual for specifying file access rights or advanced network configuration.
