How to Set Up a Fax to Email on Windows 7

Windows 7 came equipped with the addition of an external modem that is connected to a regular phone line. This system allows Windows 7 to scan documents or pictures and send and receive faxes in the same manner as a stand-alone fax machine. For more convenience, include your email address during registration to receive faxes to your email.

What You'll Need:

  • Computer with Windows 7 operating system

  • Fax modem (internal or external)

  • Analog (regular) phone line connection

  1. Power on your computer and allow it to load.

  2. Using your mouse, click on Start > All Programs > Windows Fax and Scan. However, before completing this step you'll want to ensure that your fax modem has been installed correctly to your computer and is properly connected to an analog, or regular, telephone line.

  3. Use your mouse to click on the button labeled "Fax.” If you are having trouble locating it, you can find it near the bottom of the left side menu. Select "New Fax,” from the toolbar that is found at the top of the window. This will allow you to launch the "Fax Setup Wizard.”

  4. Click on the button labeled "Connect to a fax modem" and follow the suggested steps for Windows 7 to both locate and connect to your modem.

  5. Click on "Tools > Fax Settings" to get the program set up. Locate the "General " tab, and select the box "Allow device to receive fax calls" and "Allow device to send fax calls."

  6. Click on "Automatically answer after X rings" and enter your preferred number of rings you would like before the fax is answered. Then click on the button labeled "OK."

  7. Enter your registration information, including name, email address and fax number. This will complete set-up.

  8. Successfully send and receive faxes to receive notification to your email.
