How to Set Up a Piranha Tank

Piranhas are large fish and smaller species can reach 4 inches in length while larger species can grow to 12 inches. Piranhas are shy by nature and like to hide in holes and behind foliage. It is important to replicate the natural habitat when learning how to set up a piranha tank so you will have healthy and happy fish.

Items Needed:

  • Tank

  • Stand

  • Sand or fine gravel

  • Water

  • Water treatment

  • Heater

  • Filter

  • Live plants

  • Bogwood and rocks

  • Tube light

  • Water test strips

  • Thermometer

  1. Purchase at least a 20 gallon tank for one adult piranha. If you have two or more piranhas, opt for a 55 gallon tank.

  2. Set your piranha tank on a sturdy stand in a quiet location in the room away from a window. Piranhas are nervous and frighten easily, so do not put the tank where there is a lot of activity.

  3. Place sand or a thick layer of very fine gravel in the bottom of the tank.

  4. Fill the tank with water and add a water treatment if you have chlorinated water.

  5. Install the heater and filter into the tank by referring to the manufacturer's instructions.

  6. Wait a few days for the water to balance out and add live plants. Plants absorb damaging chemicals and help put oxygen into the tank.

  7. Place aquarium bogwood, rocks and other hiding places for your piranhas into the tank.

  8. Place a single tube light above your tank. Avoid adding too much lighting to your tank as piranhas do not like bright lights.

  9. Check the pH level of the water with a test strip and make sure the level is between 6.0 and 7.5. Adjust the level if necessary and test again before adding the piranhas.

  10. Check the temperature of the water and make sure it is between 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjust the temperature if necessary before placing the piranhas in the tank.
